PLATTSBURGH CITY POLICE CHIEF DESMOND J. RACICOT ANNOUNCES HIS RETIREMENT

Police Chief Desmond J. Racicot says he will retire on January 11th, 2017. Chief Racicot has been with the Plattsburgh Police Department since 1989 and has been leading the department for the past 14 years. Racicot has seen the department through a wide range of changes and growth.   Some of these accomplishments include:

  • Complete automation in police vehicles with high definition recordings and computers.
  • The formation of a Special Response Team trained by LAPD SWAT members.
  • The development of a strong relationship with the DEA and NYSP to better fight drugs in the city.
  • Heart defibrillators in every patrol vehicle.
  • Participation in the Federal 1033 program bringing in hundreds of thousands of dollars in government equipment to the City.
  • Expanded the Zone 9 Police Training to offer yearly Police Academies, effectively training all local Law Enforcement in the Tri-County area.
  • Started a Technology division in the Police Dept., which provided the City with the infrastructure to create a City-wide I.T. division.
  • Obtained a mobile crime scene lab and command vehicle.
  • Converted the City Police Department heating and cooling system into Geo-thermal format, saving the City thousands of dollars per year.

During his tenure, Chief Racicot has seen the department through major technology upgrades, successful criminal investigations and provided the highest level of training Law Enforcement can receive.

Chief Racicot looks forward to his next challenge. He will become a Senior Public Safety Advisor for Cisco Public Safety & Defense.

On his retirement, Racicot said:

“It has been an honor and a privilege to serve the people of Plattsburgh as

Police Chief for the past 14 years. I have worked beside outstanding officers who

care deeply about the safety and security of those who live in the city. I thank the members of the Department for their dedication and for the respect and results they’ve consistently delivered.”
