Survey Results - Proposed Plastic Straw Ban

Straw Ban Survey: What Next?

Suggestions for How We Might Go Forward

By Councilor Rachelle Armstrong

First Thoughts

The straw survey showed support fairly significant for establishing green initiatives or sustainability policies for the City of Plattsburgh. Sixty-one percent of respondents said that they think it is important to reduce plastic pollution. Based on the results for the other questions, I am confident that we have enough support to build local sustainability measures.

Summary: Banning Plastic Straws, etc.

I’m focusing only on the results that express a clear enough majorities to serve as a basis on which to move forward. Interestingly here was a smaller majority in favor of banning plastic straws than for banning straws, cocktail picks and swizzle sticks.

Straws alone

51.16 yes

43.35 no

5.4 unsure

Straws, cocktail picks and swizzle sticks

52.26 yes

42.86 no

4.85 unsure

To be sure, this survey was not scientific, but it does serve as an indication about how to move forward.

Goals in moving forward

· Form a Sustainability Committee to work on plans for a straw ban and to develop future sustainability initiatives.

· Develop a “Green Stamp” incentive program that encourages food vendors to supply straws only on demand. Vendors who agree to participate would receive a certificate of appreciation.

· Consider how to fairly write and implement a law that would mandate compostable substitutes for straws, swizzle sticks, and cocktail picks applied to food vendors within the city.

o Decide what kind of exemptions would be necessary: hospitals, nursing homes, and provisions for the disabled patrons of local eateries.

o Create a timeline (one year seems plausible) for implementation that will give food vendors time to use up current inventory and invest in sanctioned compostable items.
